Invitation from the chairman and president of the German National Committee on Large Dams

The German National Committee on Large Dams is organising the 14th German Dam Symposium and the 7th ICOLD European Club Dam Symposium from 17–19 September 2007 in the historic diocesan and university town of Freising near Munich.

Dam experts from near and far are cordially invited to this event.

The Call for Abstracts for the Symposium with the general topic "Dams in Europe – Tasks and Challenges" has attracted great interest in Germany and other countries.

This was reflected by the submission of almost 200 abstracts, of which 100 have been chosen for the Symposium. Many contributions deal with spectacular dam and hydropower projects as well as practical experience in leakage detection for instance. Benefits and risks of hydraulic structures, especially with regard to the current forecasts concerning climate change and floods, are other important topics to be discussed at the Symposium.

The 14th German Dam Symposium Freising 2007 will therefore provide a comprehensive, international and up-to–date platform for dam-related questions.

With this preliminary program, made necessary by the large number of contributions, the German National Committee wants to inform you about the progress of preparations and to allow early registration.

Besides the presentations and the Technical Exhibition the social event, an authentic Bavarian Oktoberfest to be held in the nearby village of Hallbergmoos with original cuisine and draft beer, promises to be a real highlight.

The Symposium will end with a field excursion to the beautiful Alpine area of the Sylvenstein Reservoir and to the Laboratory of Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering of the Technical University of Munich at Obernach.

Invitation from the president of ICOLD European Club

Dear colleagues and friends,

ICOLD has an ambition to be the world leading professional organization on dams. To enhance ICOLDs reputation in this respect regional cooperation and activities are very important. The ICOLD European Club plays a major role in this context. The European Club carries out a wide variety of activities. It has established Working Groups devoted to various topics related to dams and organizes regular European Symposia on Dams and Reservoirs.

We are very happy, therefore to be invited to the 14th German Dam Symposium to be held in Freising, Bavaria, Germany on September 17-19, 2007 in conjunction with the 7th ICOLD European Club Dam Symposium. To maintain its position as the leading international dam organization, ICOLD needs to attract more young professionals. For this reason, I would especially like to encourage young members of the European dam community, in particular, to attend the Freising Symposium.

I am looking forward to see you in Freising!

Urban Norstedt
President of ICOLD European Club
