Erlangen – City of the Huguenots
In Erlangen there is a special athmosphere, which is neither bavarian nor franconian as there are no narrow, angled alleys but wide streets, baroque buildings and open places that are used by inhabitants for playing the "boule" game or sunbathing.
You feel the french sophistication and lifestyle the Huguenots brought to the city back in the 17th century. The atmosphere is shaped by a plurality of students with their cosmopolitan and life affirming character.
The city invites you to extensive shopping tours for all kinds of taste and price.
Cultural highlights are the city's museum and theaters. Furthermore several festivals are taking place throughout the year, for example a beer festival ("Erlanger Bergkirchweih am Burgberg"), the Comic-Salon or the poets' festivity.
Furthermore Erlangen is known for being an important business location as well as high tech and science center, with Siemens AG, AREVA NP GmbH, the university, various high tech companies and research institutions based in this city.
Medical technology is playing a mayor role and is Erlangen's declared core competence. Most of all, the university together with the Universitätsklinikum Erlangen having a great recognition.
